Weaving Tourism Into Community Dvd: Four Stories Over Time
Weaving Tourism into Communities: Four Stories Over Time is a new video DVD from the Tourism Center and provides a unique longitudinal study of four communities over two decades.
University researchers returned to four communities first profiled in 1991 to learn how these communities have fared with tourism. In their own words, community leaders describe the changes, benefits and challenges their community has experienced from tourism development over nearly two decades.
The case studies of these four communities – Dahlonega, Georgia; Sandpoint, Idaho; San Luis, Colorado, and the Villages of Van Buren, Iowa – stress five core values for tourism development:
- 1) Maintaining authenticity and sense of place
- 2) Delivering quality service and products
- 3) Using tourism as a diversification strategy
- 4) Encouraging local control
- 5) Assessing the true benefits and costs of tourism
This DVD is 65 minutes long and is appropriate for community or classroom use. For more tourism development resources visit www.tourism.umn.edu
